Supporting Gas Safety Week September 12, 2022 At Banner Property Maintenance, we are proud supporters of Gas Safety Week, which is this week between the 12th and 18th of September. What's Gas Safety Week? Every year, Gas Safety Week raises awareness of a highly important but often overlooked issue, namely the safety of your gas appliances. Gas Safety Week is organised by the Gas Safe Register, the UK's official gas registration body for gas businesses and engineers. Gas appliances are perfectly safe as long as they've been fitted correctly and are well looked after. However, if this is not the case then a number of serious consequences can arise such as gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous because it's highly poisonous, can spread highly quickly and is impossible to detect with a carbon monoxide alarm. Keep safe by following these guidelines The Gas Safe register has put together some advice and recommendations for you to follow which will help keep you and your property safe. Get a carbon monoxide alarm Because carbon monoxide can't be seen, tasted or smelled, it's highly dangerous. That's why you need to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted if you don't have one already. Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning In case you weren't aware of this already, carbon monoxide poisoning has 6 main symptoms: Headaches Dizziness Breathlessness Nausea Collapse Lack of consciousness Never do DIY work on gas appliances or block vents Without the necessary training, experience and assessments, it's highly unsafe to do any work on a gas appliance. Doing so could seriously jeopardise the safety of the appliance. Get an annual gas safety check The Gas Safe register states that gas appliances should be checked once a year and regularly maintained by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Boiler servicing is one of our main services, we'd be more than happy to help you with this, please just get in touch. Check the engineer you're using is Gas Safety registered You can make sure that the engineer you're using is fully qualified to carry out work on gas appliances by asking to see their Gas Safe ID card. All engineers, including ourselves, will have this on us at all times when working. The ID card will look something like the picture below: Understand the warning signs If your gas appliance isn't working correctly, you could be experiencing the following: Yellow or orange flames instead of blue ones Black marks on or around the appliance The pilot light keeps going out More condensation in the room than usual Get in touch today If you have any questions or concerns regarding gas safety, please do not hesitate to contact your local, friendly gas engineers at Banner Property Maintenance.
